Ask A Derm

Q. Chemical peels, lasering and microdermabrasion can sensitize skin. But are the new post-procedure products really necessary?

A. “Skin is our protective barrier, and many procedures will get rid of the top layer,” says dermatologist Dr. Lisa Kellett of DLK on Avenue (www.dlkonavenue.com). “Because of this, if you put product on your face straight away, you are more likely to have a reaction. You should not do too much to your skin after a procedure, but using gentle cleansing or skin-calming products can help the healing process. Such products usually contain ingredients like glycerin, but no matter what you choose, what’s actually important is which ingredients the product does not contain. You want products to be mild, hypoallergenic and as close to preservative-free as possible.”
