Q: What are the brown spots on my face, and how can I get rid of them?
A: “There are a number of causes for brown spots,” says Dr. Lisa Kellett of DLK on Avenue (www.dlkonavenue.com). “The three most common types are sunspots, which are proof of damage to the skin after a sunburn; age spots, which occur naturally as you get older; and pregnancy mask, so-called because the spots are caused by hormone fluctuations. I’d suggest avoiding the sun, as brown spots darken with sun exposure.
A store-bought hydroquinone-based bleaching cream will lighten spots if used daily for about three to six months. (A prescription-grade cream would work more quickly.) A peel will remove the spots, but since you need about six peels for best results, I’d suggest a laser treatment, which is effective in one session.”
