SCLEROTHERAPY (LEG VEIN) TREATMENT INFORMATION

DLK’s Sclerotherapy Treatment is a safe, effective procedure that can greatly diminish the appearance of spider veins and varicose veins with visible results in 1-3 weeks.

Sclerotherapy consists of a dextrose/salt solution being injected into the vein which irritates the vein wall and causes it to close. This procedure causes the walls of the veins to stick together and within a few weeks, the veins disappear underneath the skin’s surface. The procedure takes 20 minutes and patients can immediately return to regular activities.

TREATMENT BENEFITS:

  • Safe and effective treatment for spider veins and varicose veins;
  • Patients can return to normal activity almost immediately after treatment;
  • Can be combined with use of compression stockings (available at DLK) to improve results;
  • Quick lunch-time treatment requiring minimal time.

PRE-TREATMENT:
Patients should not apply any type of moisturizer, sun block or oil to their legs on the day of treatment. Patients may want to bring in shorts to wear during the injections so you will be more comfortable. Avoid taking aspirin and Ibuprofen, Mortin and Advil 7 days prior and post treatment Tylenol is recommend. Wear long loose pants to the treatment.

THE TREATMENT:
Sclerotherapy is the injection of a dextrose/salt solution into the vein which irritates the vein wall and causes it to close. Sclerotherapy is a safe, effective, procedure that can greatly diminish the appearance of superficial leg veins within 1-3 weeks. Patients may require a series of treatments to obtain desired results. Sclerotherapy of leg veins is a relatively simple procedure that requires no anesthesia, so it will be performed in an outpatient setting. A typical Sclerotherapy session is relatively quick, lasting only about 15 to 45 minutes.

POST-TREATMENT:
At each injection site a cotton ball will be applied over the injection site using compression tape. The tape and cotton balls can be removed after 1-2 hours. Do not tan or apply self tanner to legs for 48 hours after treatment. Bruising at the injection site is quite common. Bruises usually disappear in 2-3 weeks but might last longer. Redness can also occur at the injection site and usually resolves within 10 days.

Occasionally some mild aching is experienced in the legs for the first day or two after the injections. If desired, acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be taken. Activity is encouraged but prolonged sitting and standing, squatting, heavy weight lifting and “pounding” type exercises, including jogging should be avoided during the treatment program. After each treatment, you should notice clinical improvement.

THE RESULTS:
Diminished appearance of leg veins usually within 1 to 3 treatments.

PREVENTATIVE SUGGESTIONS:
The appearance of superficial leg veins is a hereditary condition. New veins can appear over time therefore an annual maintenance treatment is recommended. Other preventative measures include exercise, weight management, and support stocking or socks.
